Remember a dream, in springtime A big black figure hanging motionless in the sky, you can’t reach it, and no one’s to tell the where’s and why’s Remember a dream, at night time, you’re sitting on the back of a turtle looking up high, so cling to a stroke of dust, climb up to the village in the sky In a solitary light you’ll find out there is more than meets the eye Only stars around you, we are but a mirror of your mind, reconnecting figures someday you’ll see birds swim and fishes fly, Set eyes on a shape-shifting present, take a brush and paint the sky Remember a dream, you shall be just where you wish, You can draw your own hands, they might draw a painting full of bliss, Wander through a foreign land, constitute it moving with your hand, In a solitary light you’ll find out there is more than meets the eye Only stars around you, they are but a mirror of your mind, reconnecting figures someday you’ll see birds swim and fishes fly, Set eyes on a shape-shifting present, take a brush and paint the sky

Don't get lost in the light The flaming light of the paper sun Try to realize That there is a dark and deeper Side of light that you don't know A flame will burn wherever it goes When you’re lost just take a look at Picturesque pictures of the sky Chasing after the stars It will make you run out of road Hope you realize its a Waste of time it glows wherever it will Glow and shines upon the sky stay calm, keep it together or try Try to let it go and look at Picturesque pictures of the sun A coloured scene with blue and green And flowering blossom trees Bright orange skies and purple shades It will drive all your shadows away You can't escape your fate Don't try to hide, face the fact that you will fall And Try to realize that you You can go and stand where ever you will Go and shine upon the sky stay calm, keep it together or try Try to let it go and look at Picturesque pictures Picturesque pictures of the sky

A true patron of the art, You were from the start In your garden he could play, On the moon he’d drift away Wandering boys all lost at night, Trying to find their appetite Wanda your angel brings you down Strike me with your fire, Drown me in your light Strike me with your fire, Drown me in your light Your light Taste the honey from queen bee, The whip of shiny leather Stroke them with your lavish fur, and punish them forever Strike me with your fire, Drown me in your light Strike me with your fire, Drown me in your light

She’s so lovely is all I can say I’ve only known her for a single day but She means all the world to me Being inside on a rainy day Raindrops ticking time away Waking up with the smell of fresh coffee in the air Listening to singing birds on a rainy day She’s so lovely is all I can say I’ve only known her for a single day but She means all the world to me Being outside on a sunny day Feel the warmth upon my face Fall asleep and dream the dream that dreamers only dream Getting lost under stars on a summer night She’s so lovely is all I can say I’ve only known her for a single day but She means all the world to me

Mirror Man 03:43
Mirror, mirror, mirror man He knows things about you that you don't understand Mirror, mirror, mirror man. Takes you by the hand and lets you see where you stand Can you see my pain and laughter, My deepest memories Let me lose my mind, And try to confuse me Only then I will believe that you're the true mirror man Mirror, mirror, mirror man please show me land Fly me to the moon, through white castles of clouds Let me travel to the future Send me back in time Let me dive into the deepest ocean made of fantasies Let me slowly drift away But help me out when I get lost When I get lost Mirror, mirror, mirror man Take me to places to show who I am Mirror, mirror, mirror man Reflects your true nature and lets you see where you stand Mirror, mirror, mirror man He knows things about you that you don't understand Mirror, mirror, mirror man. Takes you by the hand and lets you see where you stand

You went too high up in the sky and landed in a land. With little people coloured bright, A rainbow in the morning light Walk the yellow brick road and you’ll be free Roam through the forest but don’t look back Choose your fellowship with wisdom A brainless man, a heartless one, A furry man with fearful thoughts Walk the yellow brick road and you’ll be free Take your time, think a while It will take more than a step or two Think for yourself and no one else And you’ll wake up from this dream Poppy flowers in the field are swaying back and forth Scarlet, crimson, ruby leaves The only thing that you will see Walk the road or sleep a thousand years It’s a journey of understanding Don’t be tricked or fooled by all of its beauty We could have walked together But you have changed directions So walk the path that you should walk And you will find yourself Walk the yellow brick road and you’ll be free Take your time, think a while It will take more than a step or two Think for yourself and no one else And you’ll wake up from this dream, And I’ll hope we meet again

He walks the walk, he talks the talk He has a certain air about him He wears a hat and golden rings A velvet coat and people think That he is a very wealthy man But Mr. Fox he lies, deceives, he sneaks around, he interferes with people he just hardly knows He roams around through parks and streets And hunts for curiosities When he thinks it’s candy for the eye He grabs it and he says goodbye But what goes around comes around Cause Mr. Fox, He lies, deceives, he pulls his right hand out his sleeve and slides it gently through your pockets He says Finders keepers, losers weepers Finders keepers, losers weepers What goes up, must come down And the owner of the things that I just found When he sneaks up to his prey He acts in a peculiar way He’s trained to pinch a thing or two But he hasn’t got a clue Who is standing in front of him ‘Cause Mr. Snake He’s way too slick for Mr. Fox’s gently tricks He flips the script without even blinking Finders keepers, losers weepers Finders keepers, losers weepers What goes up, must come down No more shining jewelry around his neck What goes up, must come down He left the scene with his tail between his legs

Laying in the sun I am dreaming Clouds have disappeared but snow keeps falling down Soft and warm it hits the grounds Rivers bending up and down Time stands still now that, now that she is here She exposes all your fear You cried and laughed and died and then you were born again As you keep on walking backwards into the cosmic mirror of time It all happens in the fifth season of the year Seasons breaking through there’s nothing you can do Grasses rise and rise, get lost in paradise Run into the forest and find out what hides Coalescing tides, I see the sun in your eyes I’ll take you there, it’s everywhere You cried and laughed and died and then you were born again As you keep on walking backwards into the cosmic mirror of time

Standing all alone there On a white cliff by the sea The green and white lighthouse A solid absentee And in all kinds of weather, when its cold and windy there The green and white lighthouse On the white cliffs over there Is shining with its light Miles and miles away Standing all alone there On a white cliff by the sea Can be quite isolating But it’s not a guarantee That he feels all alone when the waves hit the coast Maybe he feels fine there In the rough and salty wind Shining with its light Miles and miles away

The oddish little house just outside of town, That's where he lives And where nobody comes to see him No cats, no dogs, no family He's a lone wolf can't you see Sitting in his chair Imbued with dispair Mushrooms growing from his hair He thinks life's not fair His presence is disappearing in the past While his inner self thinks it will everlast Time is passing by He is wondering why His ticking mind left him behind The man who lost his consciousness of time While days, years, seasons pass He tries to fix his hourglass The man who lost his consciousness of time A stranger of the daylight, no glory in his life He ruined all his friendships and doesn't have a wife And if anyone would notice they'll see he never cries He's just a pitiful old man without a shimmer in his eyes Rocking in his chair Imbued with despair Mushrooms growing from his hair He thinks life's not fair They say he lost his sense of duration Resulting in his wealth of frustration While time is passing by He is wondering why The stars and sun won't shine Upon face and eyes His ticking mind left him behind The man who lost his consciousness of time While days, years, seasons pass He tries to fix his hourglass The man who lost his consciousness of time

If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there,' is a common phrase uttered among free-thinking spirits. With their psychedelic, mirage-like sound, The Small Breed take that sense of freedom to heart. Music of the past often adheres to retracing its steps in purist, traditional fashion, but this Dutch five-piece embraces the role of dissenters and mutineers with a strange mixture of curiosity and obliviousness.

The Small Breed is a band exploring all roads not taken like shipwrecked souls tasting new exotic fruits with abandon. The band’s full-length debut Remember A Dream is an ode to the rare birds of paradise that dwell in their midst, the non-conformists and eccentrics who reject reality as something rigid and absolute. The Small Breed’s hazy, phantasmagorical stratospheres bring to mind The Beatles, The Byrds, King Crimson, The Moody Blues or Syd Barrett, albeit filtered within their own, often outlandish aural parameters.

The album’s opening title track was inspired by a lucid dream by singer Guus van den Heuvel about a floating village, only to later realize the dream was projected with scary accuracy in an M.C. Escher painting he had never seen. The lush, honeyed ‘Wanda Your Angel’ was partly inspired by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s famous novel Venus In Furs. Instead of doubling down on the seedy and risque, The Small Breed wrap its subject matter – sadomasochism and bondage – in the warm, magnanimous blanket of a classic love song.

Much like records such as Jim Sullivan’s U.F.O. or Kevin Ayers’ Joy Of A Toy, Remember A Dream invokes the notion of malformed purgatories, little pockets of experience outside of our daily realities. Each song greets you artlessly like a choose-your-adventure storybook, and as far as sonic experimentation goes, The Small Breed went all-out in their inquisitiveness whilst recording these songs. The carnivalesque ‘The Man Who Lost His Consciousness Of Time’ ironically ends with hundreds of alarm clocks going off. ‘The Fifth Season’ – arguably the most sinister sounding song penned by The Small Breed so far – applies eerie tape looped vocal recordings to capture that odd tipping point of a bad psychedelic experience. The many wacky studio experimentations give each song a perplexing character of its own.

Even thematically, Remember A Dream pays homage to night owls and other meaning-seeking cowboys of the night. The music touches on loneliness, emotions, love, self-reflection, opportunities and dreams like an omniscient narrator. The playful alternation between sunshine and carelessness on the one hand and unconventional and Freudian themes on the other. Ultimately they embody the tiny cracks within the maze of existence that make us wonder whether we’re truly happy and free, or merely lost in an illusion.

As tangled and twisted as these questions seem to manifest, The Small Breed’s music takes solace in simply entertaining them. Whenever in doubt, this bunch embraces adventure above all else.
